Uzece Bourbeau, 87, Dies After Fall From Bike

Uzece Bourbeau, 87, of 27 West Street, who fell from a bicycle at the corner of Chapman and Pleasant Streets early Thursday afternoon, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Franklin County Public Hospital. Police were called to the scene following a report that a man had fallen from a bicycle and found Bourbeau walking around, bleeding from an injury on the forehead over the right eye. Although he was reluctant to be taken to receive medical treatment an ambulance was called, but he died before reaching the hospital. Medical Examiner Dr. Howard M. Kemp said death was due to natural causes, most probably heart disease. Mrs. Francis Farrell told police she was driving west on Pleasant Street and as she slowed down to turn the corner, observed the bicyclist topple down from the bike and fall into the gutter. A passing motorist rolled the man onto the sidewalk. Sgt. Donald Grogan and Capt. John Murphy went to the scene. Assisting were Robert Paul of 5 Cypress Street and Alfred Graveline of 84 Haywood Street. Bourbeau was born in Canada May 7, 1868, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cleophase [sic] Bourbeau. He retired many years ago after serving as a foreman at the Russell Cutlery in Turners Falls. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of Holy Trinity Church. Survivors include the widow, thee former Mary Mercier, three daughters, Mrs. Edwina Turner of Springfield and Mrs. Beatrice Turner and Miss Blanche E. Bourbeau at home; three sons, Lionel of Turners Falls, Rolland of Baltimore, Md., and Philip G. of Deerfield; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the McCarthy Funeral Home, followed by a Requiem High Mass at 9 at Holy Trinity Church. Burial will be in the St. Anne's Cemetery, Turners Falls. Friends may call at the funeral home until time of services.
