Alice Gaines Oetting earned a bachelor's degree from Midland College in Fremont and taught for many years before becoming a principal in Nebraska. Alice married Erich Richard Gaines in 1926, who earned a doctorate in psychology from The University of Nebraska. After raising 2 children, she and Erich moved to Menomonie, where he became a dean at Stout University where he retired in 1965 as Dean Emeritus. Alice was head of the math department at the High School. When Alice retired she became involved in many projects and was a director of the Red Cross. She directed plays, published a book and wrote many short stories.
