Katie Lou Comer Whitfield, age 87, of Elkton, passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at her home.
She was born September 1, 1928 in Shenandoah and was the daughter of the late Alfred Carson Comer and Myrtle Turner Comer. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas V. "Bob" Whitfield on August 13, 2008.
Survived by daughter, Lou Ellen Whitfield Kirkendall and husband, Mel; son, William E. Whitfield and wife, Sharon; son, Thomas R. Whitfield; granddaughters, Melody Kirkendall Morton and husband, Dave, Adair Kirkendall Terry and husband, Nick, Marie Whitfield O'Connor and husband, John; eight great-grandchildren, brothers, Alfred Comer and wife Millie, Robert Comer and wife, Bonnie, Jack Comer and wife, Sunny; nephew, Kevin Whitfield and wife, Melanie and multiple nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Whitfield served on the Board of Trustees of Evangelical United Methodist Church and was a member of the Companions Sunday School Class; Board of Directors of the Elkton Area United Services as well as a long-term volunteer; Board of Directors of the Elkton Historical Society, recipient of their "Elkton Heritage Award" and chair women of their Jubilee Ball for 25 years; past President of the Elkton Parent Teachers Association and recipient of the PTA 'Volunteer of the Year' award; past member of the Elkton Downtown Revitalization Corporation, Elkton Progressive Improvement Committee and the Elkton Women's Club.
A memorial service commemorating her life will be held Saturday, February 13 at Evangelical United Methodist Church, 513 East Spotswood Avenue, Elkton beginning at 4:00pm with Reverends David Vaughn and Ellen Martin officiating.
Friends may call at the Whitfield home anytime. Condolences may be sent by visiting kygers.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Katie Whitfield Memorial Fund which will be used to erect a gazebo in Riverside Park for community use.
