Benjamin Benson settled in Hector in December, 1813. He came from the neighborhood of New Milford, Litchfield county, Conn., crossing the Hudson River on the ice, following the track of the sleigh, in which were his wife and two children, one but five months old. He bought the farm one half mile southwest of Bennettsburg, now owned by Truman Parsons, and on it built a log house. After paying for the farm he found his title was not good, and had to buy it over again of the State. Notwithstanding the many hardships he had to endure he prospered well.
He died in April, 1866, in his 83d year. He had five sons, four of whom grew manhood, and two daughters. Chester Benson of Burdett being the youngest son, and sole survivor of the family.
Lyman H. Benson, formerly of Burdett, but now a resident of Hornellsville, is the youngest grandson.
Two sisters older than Benjamin Benson himself, had preceded him to Hector by a few years, one the wife of Jeremy Canfield, the grandfather of the late Jonas Canfield, and another the grandmother of Perry Canfield of Hector.
