James Jones Richardson was the son of early settlers of Virginia and Tennessee. During the Civil War he was a member of the late Judge Micha Saufley's company and rode with the gallant John Hunt Morgan in his historically daring raids. At the close of the war he moved from Jamestown, Tenn., to Monticello, KY, where he met and married Margaret Joan Fleming. In Wayne County, James formed a law partnership with Judge Saufley, which lasted until Judge Saufley moved to Stanford to live and practice law. James Richardson was later county attorney of Wayne county for two terms and died in office in 1881.

After their marriage in 1866, James and Margaret had three children: Mary Alice, William Vernon, and Hiram.
