Jonathan was the son of John Taggart and Elizabeth Jameson of Goffstown, New Hampshire. He was married about 1799 to Sally Dow, the daughter of Job Dow and Hannah Pattee of Goffstown and Atkinson, NH. He and Sally had two children born in Goffstown, after which he died, and Sally remained a widow the rest of her life. Sally went to live in Vermont with her son Jonathan.
