MOUNTAIN VIEW Nannie Gert Rhoney Wellman, of Mtn. View, passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 at her home. She was born Oct. 30, 1920 in Catawba County to the late Hattie Reese Rhoney and Horace R. Rhoney. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Vale. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Santas E. Wellman; grandson, Mike Johnson; son-in-law, Randy Cooke; sister, Bertie Lea Brittain; brothers, Raymond Rhoney, Clarence Rhoney, J.W. Rhoney, Boyd Rhoney and Johnnie Rhoney. Those left to cherish her memory are daughters, Tommie (Marcus) Johnson of Hildebran, Brenda (Roy) Mitchell of Hudson, Sue (Randy) Whitener of Mtn. View and Diane Cooke of Hickory; grandchildren, Leigh Ann (Shawn) Houser, Jonathan Cooke, Brad Lowman, Greg Lowman, Susie Lowman, Debbie (Andy) Hildebran, Daren (Gally) Johnson, Cynthia (Jim) Coyle, Scott Whitener (girlfriend, Vickie Greer); 14 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Virgil) Shull and Helen Wellman. The funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 13, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Pastor Tony Sayer will officiate. Her body will lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Receiving will be at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory, Friday, Feb. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. Mrs. Wellman's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
