Darlene was baptized as an infant at the St. John’s Lutheran country church where she received her early and adult Christian training along with her parents and siblings. She attended the District 38 country school through 8th grade. She then graduated from Hayes County High School in the spring of 1938 with a Teacher’s Certificate, which she used to teach three terms of country grade school in two schools close to her home.
On November 2, 1941 she married Alfred Henry Unger of Red Willow County, Nebraska at her beautiful parental farmhouse. They spent their first years on a farm in Red Willow County. In the spring of 1944, they moved back to Hayes County. In 1943 and 1944 she was hired again to teach two more terms of school in the same two schools. In the spring of 1950, she and her husband and three little boys moved to her parents’ farm where they continued to live. She loved her family, gardening, sewing, researching and writing family history.
She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, Bible School, was Sunday School Superintendent for many years and a member of Lutheran Ladies Aid and LWML.
