Alfred Edgar Distelhurst was born on October 14, 1890, in New York City, the son of Hugo Distelhurst and Frances Van Dusen. He was the brother of Helen, Frank and Paul.

He married Amanda Firux and had two sons, Alfred Edgar Jr., and an infant who passed away at the age of two days. He and Amanda stayed married until her death in 1926.

He later married Ruby Hamilton. They had two daughters, Dorothy Ann and Martha Jane.

Ed and his family were struck by an incomprehensible tragedy when their eldest daughter Dorothy was abducted while walking home from school. Many efforts were made to recover her alive, including fulfilling a ransom, but Dorothy was found murdered eight weeks after her abduction. Dorothy's story gained national attention, and although there was a spotlight on her case, her killer was never caught.

Nine years later, his son Alfred Edgar Jr. was killed in World War II.

Ed and his wife retired to Virginia, where they lived the rest of their days in peace. Ed died on October 2, 1972, shortly before his 82nd birthday. He was buried in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Ed was survived by his wife, Ruby; as well as his daughter, Martha.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Amanda (1926); his infant son (1922); his daughter, Dorothy (1934); his son, Alfred Edgar, Jr (1943); his brother, Frank (1958); his brother, Paul (1968).
