Samuel Joseph Campbell JR. first married Diana Leona France, daughter of Diana Lucina Smith ans Joseph David France, on 6 October 1870 in the Salt Lake LDS Endowment House.

Samuel and Diana's first daughter, Diana Frances, was born 26 January 1872 at Millville in Cache County. Next, on 2 June 1874, Elizabeth Ann was born. Diana's third child was Samuel Joseph, 16 January 1876, also born in Cache County.

On 27 June 1878, Diana's husband married in polygamy to one of Diana's younger half sisters, Sarah Matilda France. They had a son and then a daughter, born the next two springs, the latter being born 31 March 1880; this baby died 2 April.

Three days later, on 5 April 1879, twin daughters, Sarah Leona and Elnor Lucina were born to Diana.

Two months later, both young wives were killed, along with their husband's 15 year old sister, Harriet Rosella Campbell.

The young women and a 14 year old boy were attempting to ford the White River at Ouray, supposedly aboard a ferry, which capsized, carrying them downstream in the rushing water.

Campbell married a third time in 1881 and is buried alongside that wife.
