Actor. He is best known for his starring role in the silent film "The Income Tax Collector" released in December 1923. He also had roles in "Lew Tyler's Wives" in 1926, "Partners Again" in 1926 and the acclaimed musical "Happy Days Are Here Again" in 1930. All these films were silent black and white comedies. Since the entire film "Lew Tyler's Wives" has been lost for years, part of his professional documentation was also lost. Before breaking into the silent films, he first started as a comedian and dancing act in Broadway shows in New York City: "The Passing Show of 1913", "The Passing Show 1914", "Maid in America" in 1915, "Step This Way " in 1916, "Americana" in 1927, and "Billy Rose's Crazy Quilt" in 1931. His last film, a 1932 pre-code drama "Two Seconds", had a part for him with star E. G. Robinson. Lew Brice's birth name was Louis Borach. He was the youngest of four children of saloon proprietors Rose Stern and Charles Borach. Both of his parents were immigrants; his mother was a Hungarian Jewish woman who came to America at age ten, and his father was from France. He was the brother of Fanny Brice, whose life story was compellingly portrayed by Barbra Streisand in both the stage and film adaptations of "Funny Girl". He was the first husband of actress Mae Clarke. They married on February 26, 1928, but the union later ended in divorce.
