Actress. Dancer. Dorothy Lorraine Roberts was born in Seattle, Washington February 27, 1926, the only child of Henry George De Rome Roberts (He was born a De Rome, but was adopted in childhood by a family named Roberts), and Anne Irene Greenslit Roberts. The parents separated when Dorothy was two. Dorothy grew up in Seattle and Los Angeles. She loved animals and music (Especially what she saw and heard at the movies). She began modeling after graduating high school in 1944. She also found her way to the Circle Theatre, where director Mabel Albertson would bring in her friend Charlie Chaplin to critique and occasionally direct. It was there she met another young actor, John Crawford (A stage name: his birth name was Cleve Allen Richardson). In 1946, Dorothy began using her middle name and her father's birth surname; she become Lorraine De Rome. She was discovered by Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) and was signed as one of six Goldwyn Girls, who performed in musical numbers of MGM star Danny Kaye, and toured the United States. In 1946, John and Lorraine eloped to Mexico, where they married in Cuneravaca. In 1947, the Goldwyn Girls toured South America. John continued to work at the Circle Theatre, and also worked a number of day jobs. Lorraine's most notable films were "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (1947), which starred Danny Kaye, [Lorraine was billed as Lorraine De Rome], and "White Christmas"(1954) [As Lorraine Crawford]. Among other film appearances were: "The Barkleys of Broadway"(1949) as Cleo Fernby, "The Lemon Drop Kid"(1951) as a Dancer, "April in Paris"(1952) as Chorine, and the Three Stooges short,"Space Ship Sappy"(1957) as Fauna. When John was filming "The Greatest Show on Earth" (1952) in Sarasota, Florida, he talked Lorraine into driving to Florida. Daughter Michelle remembers Lorraine lovingly patting all the circus animals. John's career took him to New York for "The Caine Mutiny (1954) and "The Rainmaker" (1956). They divorced about 1953 but remained life-long friends. Lorraine became the lead showgirl at Hollywood's Moulin Rouge in 1955. From 1959 on, Lorraine worked in films and Television. TV appearances included turns in "Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse" (1959), "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" (1959), "Happy" (1960) and "The Jerry Lewis Show" (1963). Her last credited appearance was as a manicurist in "The Patsy" (1964), a Jerry Lewis feature film. According to her daughter Michelle, Lorraine was in musical numbers in "Camelot" in 1967. She spent the last 18 years of her life employed as a secretary. She worked for Lockheed Aircraft in the support center for the a Lockheed L1011 aircraft. After her retirement Lorraine became an animal activist, photographer and watercolorist. She joined the YWCA and became a dedicated swimmer. Her ex-husband John Crawford died September 21, 2010. Exactly six months later, Dorothy Lorraine Roberts Richardson Crawford, died at 10 AM on March 21, 2011. Her body was cremated by Valley Oaks Griffin Mortuary through Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Villlage, California.
