James Richard Bash
James Richard Bash, 81, emeritus professor of English at Indiana State University, died Friday, Aug. 30, 1996, in Southwood Health Care Center. He was born June 12, 1915, in Fort Wayne to James E. Bash and Helen Hopkins Bash. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Virginia Lowry Bash; two sons, Michael R. Bash of Thessaloniki, Greece, and David L. Bash MD of Indianapolis; two grandsons, Aaron Bash and David Bash; one granddaughter, Carrie Bash; one niece, Vera Bagley; and one nephew, John Lowry. He was a graduate of Wiley High School and received the B.A. and M.A. degrees from Indiana State Teacher's College and the Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. During World War II, he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for four years, including 20 months aboard the U.S.S. Engstrom in the north and central Pacific. From 1940 to 1942, he served as director of student publications at Indiana State Teachers College, and he returned to Indiana State in 1946, joining the faculty in English and journalism. He retired from Indiana State University as professor of English in 1978. From 1961 to 1963 he served as director of the USAID Language Program in Rabat, Morocco. Professor Bash was active in university affairs including the Faculty Council and Faculty Senate, each of which he chaired, and the Faculty Affairs Committee. His accomplishments included serving on the committee which created the current ISU faculty constitution; chairing the committee to plan the Cunningham Memorial Library, 1967 to 1971; planning the University Faculty Club, of which he was president in 1969 to 1979; and organizing and first chairing the Hazel Tesh Pfennig Scholarship Committee. His professional involvement included: American Association of University Professors, Modern Language Association, Society for the Study of Midwest Literature, Indiana College English Association and Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial Foundation. Additionally, Professor Bash was a long time member of the Eugene V. Debs Foundation, of which he was once director, and of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks. Services are 3 p.m. Tuesday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St. Visitation is noon until services Tuesday, with D. Gene England and David Bash officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park.
