Robert was born near Pawnee Buttes, spent his early years in Brush, then attended St. Vincent’s and Mullen Catholic Schools in Denver. He served four years active duty on the USS Seminole and four years as a reserve during the 1950s. When he returned home, he worked for a while on the farm with his brother in-law. On February 3, 1962, he married Donna Mae Becker in Fort Morgan; they raised 3 children: Lorilea, Joseph and David. He had a 39 year career as a journeyman linesman, with many years working for Sturgeon Electric. He helped restore electricity in Denver after the flood of 1965 and huge blizzards of the early 1970s. He was a 3rd degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 3285, a 4th degree member of St. Augustine Assembly 2616, a member of VFW Post 6482 and of Fort Collins American Legion. He greatly enjoyed fishing and watching sports, especially the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies and Florida State Seminoles. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors included: daughter Lorilea (Dave) Skretta; sons Joe and Dave Gehrig; sisters Helen Weimer and Mary Josephine Gehrig; grandchildren Dustin, Elizabeth, Jennifer and Sara; and 10 great-grandchildren. Preceding included sister Francis Steele and brothers Marion and William Gehrig. Mass of Christian Burial held February 5th at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Tabor-Rice Funeral Home handled arrangements.
