Ernest was the last of Ernest Hermann & Emma Franziska (Murck) Altgelt's 9 children. His siblings were: Antonia Laura, Hermann Hugo, George Conrad John, Helene Eveline, Ida Adele, August Ernest, Wilhelm Otto, & Franz Hugo.
He married Mary Bennett, daughter of David Woodson & Mildred Jane (Bostick) Heard, in San Antonio on Dec. 17, 1895.
Their sons were: Augustus Albert, Woodward Woodson, Ernest Junior, Daniel Dane, & James Ernest.
Ernest died from Acute Diverticulitis of Ascending Colon at 4 a.m. on October 27, 1943. He had lived 71 years, 2 months, & 11 days.

Ernest J. Altgelt, 71, of 2103 San Pedro Avenue, veteran real estate operator, who was active in practically every major movement to develop San Antonio during the past half century, died in Nix Hospital at 4 a.m. Wednesday. He had been ill for more than a month.
Known as a booster of the city, Altgelt was largely instrumental in the purchase of the 2200 acres of land for Randolph field in 1926.
He was a leader in the widening of many main thoroughfares, particularly Main Avenue in 1928.

He served as one of the three commissioners in charge of the Texas Centennial celebration, which gave Texas tremendous advertising throughout the country. Altgelt was one of the original Federal Housing directors in this city.
Born in San Antonio, August 16, 1872, the son of Ernest and Emma Murck Altgelt, he attended the old German-English school, and was graduated by Texas A. Nd M. College in 1892.
He was a member of the famous Belknap rifles in 1885. From 1892 to 1902 he was manager of Wolff and Marx store. He operated Collins Machinery Company later, and then owned the Axtell Machinery Company.
MANY ACTIVITIES
He then entered the real estate business, specializing in downtown property. He was active in civic and political activities, and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
On December 17, 1895, he married Miss Mary Burnett (should be Bennett) Heard of this city, who survives him. Other survivors are: four sons, A.A. "Gus" Altgelt of San Antonio, E.J. Altgelt Jr. of New York City; Woodward Altgelt, San Antonio; and Capt. Daniel D. Altgelt, Del Rio: nine grandchildren; a brother, Herman, New Braunfels; and two sisters, Mrs. Felix Stapper and Mrs. Ida Schweppe, both of this city.
Funeral services will be conducted at the home of Woodward Altgelt, 107 West Mistletoe Avenue, at 4 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Samuel Capers of Christ Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will be in Alamo Masonic Cemetery, and pallbearers will include: Lane Taylor, W.B. Hamilton, John Bennett, John Mousebach, Marsall Terrell, and Dr. E.V. DePew, active bearers; J.H. Kirkpatrick, L.B. Clegg, C.A.C. Haiff, W.B. Tuttle, Jesse D. Oppenheimer, J.D. Dodson, R.W. Morrison, Ed W. Richardson, Dr. J.H. Burleson, John H. Cunningham, Theo M. Plummer, Claude V.
