Chester, March 14. The headless body of Charles O. Atkinson, a fireman employed by the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad, was found near the tracks In Lamokin yard this morning. How he met his death is a mystery, as no one saw the accident. Atkinson was expected to occupy his post on the engine hauling the Lamokin accommodation, leaving Lamokin at 6:50 A. M. As he did not report for duty, another fireman took his place and the train proceeded on its way. Soon afterwards Atkinson's body was found, the head having been completely severed from the body. A possible solution of his death is that he was on the left side of the engine looking under the locomotive adjusting part of the ash pan, and the engineer, not seeing him, started up, cutting his head off. {The Philadelphia Inquirer; March 15, 1896}
