Ralph Dale Breedlove

Brevard - Ralph Dale Breedlove, 83, a longtime resident of Brevard, died peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006, at his home.

He was born July 13, 1923, in Dawes, W.Va., to Chandie Rexford and Lyda Epperly Breedlove who preceded him in death.

He attended public school in Dawes and graduated from East Bank High School in East Bank, W.Va. in 1941.

He began his college career at West Virginia University Institute of Technology in the Fall of 1941, but his studies were interrupted at the beginning of World War II.

Ralph joined the Army and served in Germany with the 14th Armored Division and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in permitting the armed forces to continue their mission on the battlefield.

Later he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in another mission.

He received his honorable discharge from the army on Nov. 13, 1945, at Camp Bowie, Texas.

While still in the army, Ralph attended the University of Cincinnati in Ohio for studies in mechanical engineering. After his time in the military, he continued his studies at the West Virginia University Institute of Technology in Montgomery, W.Va., earning his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and mathematics.

On Dec. 26, 1946, Ralph married Betty Lucina McGraw in Chelyan, W.Va. If Ralph had lived until December 26th of this year, Ralph and Betty would have been married for 60 years.

In 1947, Ralph began working for E.I. DuPont at the Belle Plant in Belle, W.Va. He was then transferred to DuPont in Wilmington, Del., for a year and in 1958, he was transferred to the Cedar Mountain plant. On Nov. 30, 1984, Ralph retired with 37 years of service at DuPont.

He is survived by his wife, Betty and his son, Billy Rex and his wife, Lynn Burrell Breedlove. Other survivors include his grandchildren, Audra Breedlove Cusack and her husband, Chris Cusack, Anna Breedlove, Blaire Lenore Breedlove and Chas Breedlove; and great-grandson, Christopher Edwin Cusack; sister, Helen Murphy and her husband, Charles (Kayo) Murphy; two nephews, Richard Murphy and his wife, Jill and Mark Murphy and his wife, Debbie; five grand nieces and nephews; and his sister-in-law, Patricia McGraw Hontgas and her husband, Chris.

When the Breedloves moved to Brevard in 1958, Ralph joined Brevard Wesleyan Church where he was an active member and a member of the church choir. At Brevard Wesleyan, he was the director of the annual live nativity scene for 25 years, the teacher of the Fellowship Sunday school class for 37 years and was on the local board of administration for 42 years. On Oct. 19, 2003, Ralph was elected local board member, emeritus, for his dedication to Brevard Wesleyan Church and for his years of service as chairman of the local board of administration.

He was a devoted Christian, church member, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Brevard Wesleyan Church. The service will be conducted by Pastor Jerry Lumston and Ralph's former pastor, Donald Milstead.

The family will receive friends in Heritage Hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Brevard Wesleyan Church Building Fund.

Forest Lawn Mortuary of Hendersonville assisted the family with arrangements.
