Yates managed two Ocala farms during his career. Needles, the first Florida-bred Derby winner, was broken to saddle and trained by Yates as a yearling at Dickey Stables in Ocala. The colt won the 1956 Belmont Stakes, Florida Derby and Flamingo Stakes and was second in the Preakness.
Yates worked as a trainer for Ocala Stud Farm and was a past president of the Florida Thoroughbred Farm Managers Association. He was a native of Taylorsville, Ky., and a member of First Christian Church in Ocala.
Yates died Friday. His survivors include his wife, Kathleen Yates; three sons, Roy, Frank and Keith Yates; three daughters, Velma Conry, Anne Hovendon and Kathy Yates; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Roberts Funeral Home in Ocala, with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery, also in Ocala.
