In 1910 he and his parents and four siblings lived in a house they owned, mortgage free, in Pine Township, Armstrong County, PA. His father worked as a fireman on a steam shovel, and his brother Harry worked as a laborer for a railroad.

In 1920 he and his parents and three of his siblings--all but Cornelia--lived there. His father worked as a laborer at a sawmill, Harry as a clerk at an aluminum works, and Dorothy as a public school teacher. They lived on Stewartson Furnace (now just Stewartson) Road.

In 1940 he and his wife, their two children, and her parents lived in a house they were renting for $25 a month at 1106 Wilson Avenue in Kittanning, PA. He and his father-in-law both owned trucks and worked at hauling.

James D. Bechtel, 51, of Templeton, died at 8:58 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, 1963 in Armstrong County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Bechtel was born January 8, 1906 at Dee (Stewardson Furnace), Pine Township, a son of McCloud Steele Bechtel and Margaret (McCauley) Bechtel. He attended Templeton Presbyterian Church and was a past president of Local 952 AFL-CIO and vice president of Stewardson Furnace Reunion. A brother Harry, died January 1, 1963. Surviving are his widow, Bernice (Summers) Bechtel; two sons, James B. Bechtel, Conneautville and Ott Bechtel, at home, one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Esther)
Kennedy Kittanning RD6; four grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lewis (Cornelia) Drohn, Mahoning; Mrs. Dorothy Shilling, Templeton, and Mrs. Carl (Grace) Powers, Dayton. Friends may call after 7 p.m. this evening at Merwin Funeral Home, Kittanning where family visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. T. Donald Hamilton, pastor of Northern Armstrong County Presbyterian Parish and Rev. Russell Hawk, pastor of Templeton Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Cochran Cemetery.
