In 1940 she, her husband, their two children, and her parents lived in a house they were renting for $25 a month at 1106 Wilson Avenue in Kittanning, PA. James and his father both owned trucks and worked at hauling.

Mrs. Bernice J. Bechtel, 63, of Templeton died this morning in Armsdale Home, Kittanning RD5. Born July 6, 1903 in Templeton, she was a daughter of Ott and Elizabeth (Zellefrow) Summers. Mrs. Bechtel was a member of the Templeton Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two sons, James B. Bechtel, of Conneautville (Crawford County) and Ott S. Bechtel, Templeton; one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Esther) Kennedy, Kittanning RD6, and five grandchildren. Services were held and burial made in Cochran Cemetery.
