Mrs. Nancy Carolyn Whitener Hughes passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 21, 2016. Carolyn was born May 10, 1933 in Hickory, NC to the late Dalton Abernathy and Jennie Ida Yoder Whitener. She graduated from High Point College in 1955 and taught second grade for several years before she met and married Charles C. Hughes, Jr. in 1958. She later worked for Dallas Furniture Store until the death of her husband Charles in 1983 then started Hughes Enterprises. She worked until the death of her son John in 2012, and then retired.
She was a strong, supportive, thoughtful, caring and kind woman who loved many. She was very independent and determined and would stop at nothing if she wanted something done. In the last few years, you could always find her in her recliner with a puzzle book, the TV on, a cat in her lap and a big smile on her face.
The family would like to say that God took his angel away from us too early and she will be greatly missed by many. We are heartbroken to have lost such a sweet, funny, and loving mother. Someone who was always there to wipe away your tears, give hugs and kissed when you needed them most and make you laugh when you thought your world was crashing in.
Surviving are her children Jennie Hughes Maynard of Virginia, Nancy Hughes Bailey and Charles C. Hughes, III of Jamestown, NC, and one granddaughter Jordan Elizabeth Maynard of Maryland. Preceded in death are her husband Charles C. Hughes, Jr., and her son John Dalton Hughes.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Friday, January 29, 2016 at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Dr., High Point.
Memorials in Carolyn's memory may be sent to Jamestown United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 339 Jamestown, NC 27282.
