Herman Joseph Chase

Herman Joseph Chase passed away June 9, 2015, at Walla Walla General Hospital. Funeral service will be Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. Vault interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be held Monday, June 15, from 2-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Home Society or the Walla Walla Catholic Schools through the funeral home.

Herman was born Oct. 5, 1922, to Lloyd and Mary (Hart) Chase. He lived 92-plus years in Walla Walla.

His education at Whitman College was interrupted by World War II in his sophomore year. He was drafted by the U.S. Army and assigned to Company B, 165th Infantry, 27th Division. For his service he received:

Bronze Star
Asia Pacific Medal, Good Conduct;
two Purple Hearts and Combat & Infantry Expert Rifleman awards.


After the war he resumed his education at Whitman College and received his degree. He became one of the original employees of the district office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and retired after working 35 years as the chief of property.

He married Dorothy Anne Schamer on April 15, 1949. They had six 6 children and were later divorced. He married Patricia Mae Walmsley in November 1973. Together they raised her three children.

Herman was a member of the VFW, the BPOE and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Retirees. He was also a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.

He loved fishing for trout and steelhead and also hunting for quail and pheasants. He shared these passions with his children and brothers in-law. He loved his dog and was a great camp cook. He was a wonderful dad, grandpa and great-grandpa. “We love and miss you.”

He was preceded in his death by his parents, Lloyd and Mary (Hart) Chase; his wife, Patricia; son, John Chase. He is survived by Belinda Tompkins (Russell Karger) of College Place, Joan (Gene) Weinmaster of Walla Walla, Paul (Martha) Chase Wellesley of Massachusetts, Craig (Jeane) Chase of Walla Walla, Christopher Chase of Idaho, John (Lisa) Walmsley of LaGrande, Ore., Amy (Dan) Kramer of Minnesota, Mark Walmsley of Spokane, and many grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
