Mary Battle Bumgarner, 94, of Sylva, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. Burial was in Bumgarner Cemetery in Whittier.

Pallbearers were Jeff Bryson, Randy Ledford, Gary Boyer, Critt Shook, Troy Spears, Donovan Pittman and Scott Boyer.

She was a lifelong resident of Jackson County, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and working crossword puzzles. She was a member of Wilmot Baptist Church, and a graduate of Asheville Normal Teachers College and Western Carolina University. She was a teacher in schools in Jackson and Swain counties from the age of 21 and retired in 1973. She was a member of the N.C. Association of Educators and the N.C. Retired Teachers Association. She was a daughter of the late James E. Battle and Maggie Parks Battle.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Burton Bumgarner; three brothers; and one sister.

Surviving are one son, James G. Bumgarner of Morganton; two daughters, Shelba A. Bumgarner of the home and Melena B. Sherrill of Whittier; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
