William “Don” Wells, 99, of Coal City, passed away January 25, 2016 with his family by his side.

Don was born June 29, 1916 in Owen County, the son of the late William and Lillie (Hauser) Wells. Don married Maxine Collenbaugh on June 27, 1936. After 76 years of marriage, she preceded him in passing on January 16, 2013. Don worked many jobs throughout his life. To name a few, he worked for the rail road, was a carpenter, and a lifelong farmer. He and Maxine lived on their farm for over 75 years. In the 1960’s he began raising Black Angus cattle. Don retired from Peabody Coal Mine around 1977 after 20 years of mining.

Don was a member, elder, and song leader at the Coal City Church of Christ. He enjoyed coon and rabbit hunting, spending time with his family and raising his Black Angus cattle. Don loved riding his four wheeler everywhere. Into his mid-90’s he was still mowing his yard, riding his four wheeler and caring for his cattle.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Wanda Francis; and seven of his siblings.

Don is survived by his son, Gerald Wells (Nelda) of Spencer; son in law, Bill Francis of Clay City; grandchildren, Darla Thomas (Bill) of Spencer, Kevin Wells (Kelli) of Elletsville, David Francis (Connie) of Coal City, Janell Grafe of Clay City; 12 great grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren; sister, Rosella Parks of Center Point; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A special thank you to Southern Care Hospice for their wonderful care for Don during his final days.

Services will be Friday, January 29, 2016 at 2pm at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with Brother Scott Wiley officiating. Burial will follow at Fiscus Cemetery.
