Son of Henry and Letitia (Abbot) Anderson. Some of his siblings adopted the surname Abbot-Anderson. John Grattan was an Ensign, 18th Royal Regiment of Ireland, in 1846 and later transferred to the 37th Regiment in the same year. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1850. He sold his Commission on getting an appointment as Civil Engineer, Allahabad, India, having previously worked at road construction in Ceylon 1851 -1852. He married Alice Morgan Abbot January 17, 1857, at Allahabad, West Bengal, India. They died at Cawnpore, India on June 27, 1857. He had been wounded in the ankle on the previous day, but carried his wife to the boats and, he thought, to freedom, only to perish in one of the most terrible massacres of the Indian Mutiny.
