LITTLE SON OF MR. AND MRS. G. L. SMITH PASSES AWAY
The community was saddened yesterday morning by news of the death of "Hoppie", the four-and-a-half-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Smith. The child had been suffering for two or three days with a sore throat and slight fever, which later developed into bronchial pneumonia, but his condition was not considered serious until Tuesday evening when he suddenly became worse and no power seemed able to stop the ravages of the disease. He has always shown a tendency toward weakness of the throat and did not have strength to resist the trouble.
W. A. Hopkins who was in Des Moines at the time and Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Smith of Independence, grandparents of the child, were notified Tuesday evening and made all possible haste to arrive coming by way of Benton, but missed the train and were compelled to make the drive from Benton over the extremely muddy roads. They arrived just before their grandson breathed his last.
