He studied nursing at St. Helena and in 1900 went to England as a student missionary. He married Annie Owens in 1904 in Leicester, England. They worked in the medical field in connection with the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
In 1907 they went to Kenya, British East Africa and stayed there seven years. They returned to the United States for seven years and in 1921 went to Angola. There he founded the Bango Mission and was one of the first to put the Luo language into writing. In 1936 he returned to Loma Linda and in 1949 moved to Stockton.
