OBITUARY

Charles Lee Zandstra, of Highland, IN passed away on September 21, 2014, leaving his family and friends to meet his Savior-Jesus Christ and those who went before him. Mr. Zandstra, born on June 22, 1933 in Highland, Indiana is the son of the late Charles B. and Sadie (Folkerts) Zandstra. Mr. Zandstra is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Arlene K (Vande Riet) Zandstra. He is the loving father of Charlene (Mike) Van Baren of Lansing, IL, Charles Lee II (Linda Joy) of Schererville, IN, Scott (Emily) Zandstra of Schererville, IN, Kent "Duke" (Kristen) Zandstra of Chicago, IL, Linda Marie (Jeff) Overway of Holland, MI: loving Grandpa of 12 grandchildren: Michael and Cherlyn Van Baren of Lansing, IL, Michelle, Jonathan and Matthew Zandstra of Schererville, IN, Mica and Meghan Zandstra of Chicago, IL, Vincent, Jalen, Brycen, and Lucas Overway of Holland, MI, and Morgan Zandstra of Schererville, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents: Charles B. and Sadie Zandstra; brothers Benjamin, Bartel, and Dennis Zandstra. He is survived by his sister Kathleen (James) Manion of Redding, CA; one brother Duane (Dianne) Zandstra of Grand Rapids, MI; sisters-in-law Patricia Zandstra of Dyer, IN and Beatrice Zandstra of Highland, IN, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Zandstra graduated from Highland Christian School, Illiana Christian High School, Calvin College, and Valparaiso School of Law with a J.D. Law degree in 1958. He served with the 5073rd Logistical Command Unit of the U.S. Army. He married Arlene K. (Vande Riet) Zandstra of Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 28, 1962. He established his private practice of law in 1960 and practiced law in Lake County until December 31, 2007. Arlene and Chuck travelled extensively to over 30 countries and enjoyed their cottage with family and friends on Lake Macatawa in Holland, MI for many years. He was an avid water skier and enjoyed driving his power boats pulling skiers and tubers all summer long. Mr. Zandstra actively supported Christian education at all levels. He served on the board of trustees of Trinity Christian College, Elim Christian School for special needs and handicapped children, Camp Roger, Christian Schools International and Middle East Reformed Fellowship. He also was a member of the Highland Kiwanis Club and legal counsel to Lake County Women's Center and numerous other not-for-profit institutions and churches. He was a member of Faith Church of Dyer, IN. Mr. Zandstra was an ardent student of the Bible. His private library is replete with theological and educational books. He was passionate about his faith and was strong and direct when discussing his core beliefs. Is faith was unwavering whether there were happy times or trials in his life or his family and friends. His Faith and his family were his passions. He was forever grateful for God's many blessings. His favorite sayings were "Count your many blessings", "The whole world is in His Hands", and "Contend for the faith which was once for all entrusted and delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3) To God be the Glory!" Funeral services and visitation will be held at Faith Church in Dyer (100-81st Avenue) on Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with the service starting at 11:00 a.m. and officiated by Pastor Mike Pitsenberger. Visitation will resume after the funeral service until 3:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Memory Lane Cemetery on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Highland Christian School and Illiana Christian High School.
