Herschell grew up on the family farm near the Clay county line (Tabortown road) and graduated from Terre Haute Veterinary College in 1915. He began his practice in Cory, Indiana in the Livery Barn belonging to Tom Modesitt in 1918 He then moved the practice to Terre Haute locating on east Crawford Street and 24th. His parents were John Pearson and Minnie Mary Dyer Bratt. In 1915, he and his brother Vivian married sisters, Janetta and Ann Elizabeth Myers from Kansas.
