Born in Saskatchewan, Evelyn was a bacteriologist and wife of a veterinarian, Dr. Herschell Marvin Bratt. She met her husband at Michigan State University. Her mother's family moved from England to Saskatchewan with several other relatives. The family moved from Canada to Florida and then Texas.
