On Tuesday, January 6, 2009, Anna Ruth Jones, the “old cross lady” crossed over to be with her Lord and Savior, at the age of sixty-six.

Born August 28, 1942, in Durham, Anna was the daughter of the late Rufus Irving and Ruth Partin Jones. She graduated from the Watts School of Nursing, and had worked at Lenox Baker Hospital and also at Murdoch Center. She was an active and longtime member of Westwood Baptist Church.

Anna liked making many crafts, and was an avid maker of cross bookmarks from colorful plastic canvas and ribbon, a craft she began in 1994, which she considered her own special ministry, giving her the title, “the old cross lady.” The crosses, which she gave away, were given out at anniversary or wedding celebrations, left in hospital rooms or nursing homes, and had made their way to other countries, even to the White House to President Bush.

Anna was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Her cherished cat, Sir Rufus of Iredell survives her, as do her cousins, and special friends, Perry Norris, Harry Jenkins, and Dianne and Hank Lock.

Graveside funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Maplewood Cemetery, section 3 with Dr. Harry Byrd and Perry Norris officiating.
