Her last husband was Ernie Howell who adopted Arthur some time before he started high school in Ithaca, New York. They were living in New York when Ernie died of accidental drowning in 1969. Helen then moved to California in 1971 to be near her son who had moved west in the sixties. She died in her home the following year, of natural causes, the same year her only grandchild was born.
