Lochlin W. Caffey served in Company A of the 2nd Georgia Volunteer Infantry from May 11, 1898, to November 30, 1898, where he became a Sergeant.

On September 2, 1899, Caffey enlisted as a private in the US 40th Volunteer Infantry. where he quickly rose to the rank of Sergeant and then 1st Sergeant of Company. On March 20, 1900, he was given a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant on May 18, 1900. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant on September 27 with the 26th Infantry.

Caffey was transferred to the 15th Infantry on July 12, 1902. In 1905 he was Battalion Adjutant. He was promoted to Captain on March 4, 1911, and Major on August 3, 1917.

He commanded the 22nd Infantry as a Colonel from September 1, 1928 to June 30, 1930. He retired on August 31, 1932, after 30 years service.
