Delores Sue (Childress) Compton born on April 4, 1925, in Carthage, Missouri, to Hal Smith Childress and Ida Gertrude Ralston Childress was promoted to glory into the arms of her Lord and Savior on January 12, 2016.
Sue was a 1943 graduate of Mount Vernon High School with twelve years of perfect attendance. Following graduation she attended Draughon Business College, Springfield, Missouri.
Sue was married to Lemuel Elbert Compton on November 21, 1953, in Carthage, Missouri.
For twelve years Sue worked at Ozark Electric Cooperative as a work order accountant. Following her marriage to Lem, they were in business for 41 years in Mount Vernon.
Faith was important to Sue and she joined First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Mount Vernon at Easter in 1941. She taught Sunday school for many years with perfect attendance and some of her students were John Furgason, Bob Long, Carol Rodgers and many more. She was active in women's work within the local church, in the Ozark Lakes Area and the Christian Churches of Mid America, serving in leadership roles and making friends around the state. Sue is Elder Emeritus of First Christian Church and served on many committees there. She loved being a member of the faith community and serving our Lord and Savior.
Other organizations she enjoyed were Elk Horn Prairie DAR, serving as Regent, Lawrence County Historical Society, Childers-Childress Family Association, and Mount Vernon High School Alumni Association.
Sue and Lem traveled extensively throughout the eastern states searching libraries and cemeteries for genealogy information. From her research Sue published several books on family history. During this time new friendships were made with other family members.
Survivors include her husband, Lem Compton, of the home; daughter, Sara Suellen Compton and husband, Terry Peterman, of Nevada, Missouri; brother-in-law Jim Compton of Mount Vernon; nieces Emily Kay Cartwright and Mary Craver and nephew Jim Garrison and numerous friends.
A funeral service under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Rev. David Nordyke officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Vernon IOOF Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 15, 2016, in the funeral home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Mount Vernon, Children's Emergency Fund of Mount Vernon or the charity of your choice in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be shared at this website.
