Donald was a member of Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church, Aurora, Colo. He was a fourth-degree Knights of Columbus and was formerly in the Army National Guard in Missouri.
Over the years, Donald served as president of the Athletic Association of St. Francis Borgia High School, Warrensburg Jaycees, Central Missouri State University Booster Club, Warrensburg Country Club, Warrensburg Tiger Booster Club, parish council at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Boy Scout fundraising drives.
He also served on the board of directors for the Franklin County Country Club, United Missouri Bank, the Leukemia Society, Southeast Business Partnership and Ridge View Academy, where he was instrumental in forming the mentoring program for the boys at Ridge View.
Donald worked for American Family Insurance for 39 years. He was an agent and district manager in Missouri for 23 years and Hall of Fame All American from 1972 to 1993. He became the Colorado sales director in 1992 and retired after 10 years as senior sales vice president for the Mountain Region of Colorado, Nevada, Utah and Idaho in 2007.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude Hoelscher Alfermann and Cornelius Alfermann, and one sister, Marilyn "Dickie" Alfermann.
