James Arthur Barnes, 97, of Donnellson, passed away at 12:32 a.m. Sunday, January 10, 2016 at his home.

Born October 28, 1918 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Earl and Frances (Clinton) Barnes. On January 27, 1946 he married Elaine Olive Puder in Keokuk. She preceded him in death on October 6, 2009.

Survivors include one son, Dennis (Natasa) Barnes of Charlotte, North Carolina; one daughter, Denise (Roger) Beck of Donnellson; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Barnes of Keokuk and Bonnie Francis of the Quad Cities; one brother, Delbert (Ette) Barnes of Keokuk; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elaine, four brothers, and two sisters.

James was a member of the Donnellson United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. James worked as a meter reader for Union Electric and was a farmer. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, carving, gardening, and cooking. James was very inventive. He also enjoyed working with Habitat for Humanity.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2016 at the Donnellson United Methodist Church with Pastor Peg Ellingson officiating.

Burial is in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Keokuk, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Lee County Hospice.

The Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson is assisting the family with arrangements.
