John Powers Martin was born in Shelby County, Alabama, the son of Sarah Jane Stewart and John S. Martin, CSA and grandson of William and Ede Martin. John's father, John S. Martin, died in the war and his mother Sarah received a widow's pension. John had one sister, Mary Gertrude Martin, and one half sister, Lula D. Clifton. John traveled with his family after the war to Hopkins County, Texas. In 1882 John married Aletha Ellen Robertson. They had three children: John William, Bertie Lea, and Artie Gertrude.
John died in 1888 of malaria.
