James was the son of James and Jane Richardson Whyte of Scotland and Ireland and had a sister, Mary (Welever). He was a farmer in Liberty Township. James married Sarah Beard on 9 October 1877 in Wood County, and they had children: Nora(1879) and Elmer(1881). His second marriage was to Soloma Beard on 19 April 1883 in Lucas County, and they had Alva (1883). In 1895, he married his third wife, Elizabeth Hartman Beard, who had been previously married to William Beard. In 1900,under the name Whyte he was living in Paulding County and in 1910, he was in Hillsdale County, Michigan. James was naturalized in 1864 in Bowling Green, Ohio. Returning to Wood County from Michigan, he fractured his femur and bronchitis set in. Six days later he died at the age of 77 years and 5 months.
