Gordon J. "Sam" Ebner was born December 29, 1930 in Waukon, Iowa. He died on July 14, 2015 in Sparks, Nevada. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Olga Ebner, a sister, Arla Bulman and a brother, Charles Ebner.

He was greatly loved and will be missed by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn; sons, Dan, Randy and Greg (Ann); daughter, Laurie (Andy) Echeita; and grandchildren: Mike (Crystal) Ebner; Deserie (Nate) Tillman; Rosemary and Charlotte Ebner; and Jess and Michonne Echeita. He is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

Sam grew up on the family farm in northeast Iowa. During high school he met Marilyn Sorenson and they were married on May 10, 1952. While Marilyn completed nurses' training, Sam served in the US Air Force. His duties brought the newlyweds to Reno where Sam was stationed at Stead AFB with the Winter Survival Training Unit.

Sam was employed by Savage and Son for nearly 40 years. He began as an apprentice plumber and completed his career serving as a plumbing and heating foreman for large projects such as Lawlor Events Center and the El Dorado Casino.

Sam and Marilyn raised their family in Sparks and the kids have many fond memories of camping, hunting and fishing expeditions with family friends throughout Nevada and the West. Sam, an avid hunter and explorer, always wanted to see what was beyond just one more hill!

After retiring, Sam and Marilyn enjoyed RV travel around the U.S. including many trips to visit relatives in Iowa. Sam's passion for golf led him to local courses, especially Brookside, several days a week for years. He was a photographer, wood carver, tole painter and could build just about anything. His family and friends loved listening to his stories. Sam volunteered for the American Cancer Society, driving patients to and from appointments. His deep faith was expressed through decades of activity at Lord of Mercy Lutheran Church, Cursillo, and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. We will miss his quiet, strong and loving presence.

A memorial service will be held Monday, August 10 at 3 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 501 California Ave., Reno, NV 89509.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Lung Association (www.lung.org/donate/) or Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd (please send donations to the church mailing address: 357 Clay St. Reno, NV 89501.)
