WASHINGTON, IL - Virginia L. Summer, 88, of Washington passed away at 8:55 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Vista Hospital-East in Waukegan, Ill.
Virginia was born on Aug. 5, 1920, in Lowpoint, IL to Rudy and Ida Schneider Attig. She married Lester Summer on Nov. 19, 1941, in Lowpoint. Lester died on Feb. 6, 2002, in Peoria.
Survivors include three daughters, Shari (Ken) Majors of Waukegan, Joan (Bill) Brandon of Peoria and Kathy (Bob) Hillman of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Washington; eight grandchildren, Lori (Todd) Arvidson, Brad Majors, Toph (Amy) Majors, Julie (Darren) Smith, Jeff (Lorie) Brandon, Brody (Myndi) Hillman, Drew Hillman and Summer (Tim) Karst; and nine great-grandchildren, with the 10th on the way.
For many years, Virginia had worked in the kitchen at Washington Community High School. She also had worked in the Washington Library and at the Post Offices in Washington and Rantoul.
Virginia and her husband, Lester, were charter members of Grace Bible Church in Washington, where Virginia had been involved with many church activities over the years.
She also had been a member of the Christian Women's Club, active in the Washington Senior Center when it was at St. Mark's and had attended Brown's Business College in Peoria.
Virginia enjoyed listening to her talking books and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 27, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Grace Bible Church, 1109 S. Main, Washington, with Pastor Adam Kipp officiating. Burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery in Washington. Visitation will be a half hour prior to services at the church. Mason-White Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to either Grace Bible Church or the Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center in Peoria.
