Life's Work/Service/Interests: Bessie was attending Brigham Young University when she met Marden J. Clark on a blind date. After his first kiss with Bessie, Marden drove a new car into a light pole. Three families from his hometown of Morgan shared that car. While working as a draftsman for Lockheed in Los Angeles, Marden took a bus back to Salt Lake City and married Bessie on October 25, 1941, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They checked into Hotel Temple Square, where their brothers called often enough that the young couple told the desk "no more calls." Bessie and Marden settled in Provo, Utah, where Marden was a professor in the English department at Brigham Young University. After raising six children, Bessie completed her bachelor’s degree and earned her master’s degree at BYU. They spent the 1970 to 1971 school year at the University of Oulu Finland, where Marden served as a Fulbright professor. With their three youngest children, they explored Europe in "Boris," the VW Vanagon they bought there. Bessie loved exploring backroads, dubbed “Bessie Boulevards” by Marden. Following Marden's retirement from BYU, they both taught English at the University of Qing Dao in China, traveled to the Holy Land, India, South America, Australia, New Zealand and Africa, and were arrested for protesting at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site. Marden passed away on May 15, 2003. Bessie Lloyd Soderborg Clark departed this life January 5, 2016. She was 96.
