Albert P. "Al" Gillespie, II

NOTE: Albert II was named after his grandfather Albert Pendleton Gillespie.

Albert P. Gillespie, II, age 90 of Tazewell, VA died Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at his home. Born January 22, 1925 at Tazewell, VA, he was a son of the late William M. Gillespie, II and Mary Guerrant Gillespie. He resided in his beloved Tazewell, VA all his life except for 3 years while in the US Army during WWII. He was drafted at age 18, and served from 1943 to 1946. He was in the 251st Engineer Combat Battalion which landed at Omaha Beach on 9-29-44. From there they continued into France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. In Germany, the Battalion faced a terrific barrage on the Roer River with many lives lost. The Battalion later returned to France where they set up Camp Baltimore. Mr. Gillespie returned to Tazewell in March of 1946. He attended VPI, majoring in agriculture. In 1950 he returned to the family farm and later worked for VA Farm Bureau Insurance Co. as an insurance advisor for 24 years. He was a longtime and faithful member of the Tazewell Lions Club and member of the Golden Hokie Club at Virginia Tech. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 133 of Tazewell and a Director of Tazewell National Bank. Mr. Gillespie was a member and elder in the Tazewell Presbyterian Church. The days of his declining health were made better by the kind and compassionate care given by staffs of Tazewell Community Hospital, Home Nursing Co., Heather Duty and staff, and many friends who helped. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lucie Gillespie Greever; brothers in law, Edgar Greever and William Adams.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce H. Gillespie; daughter, Lucie G. D’Amato and husband, Vincent; son, William M. Gillespie, III and wife, Sherry; sister, Mary Gillespie Adams; grandchildren, Albert Pendleton Gillespie, III, Margaret Russell D’Amato, Joseph Dylan Gillespie, and Joseph Gillespie D’Amato; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and many friends; special ones in his life, Bobby Gillespie, his cousin, Jeff Gillespie, Cody Burnette, and Hank Stover; special caregivers, Mike Barnes and Tyrone Murray.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10 AM Friday, January 8, 2016 at Jeffersonville Cemetery in Tazewell, VA with the Reverend Dr. Thomas A. Conley officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by members of Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, VA and VA National Honor Guard Team of Gate City, VA.
