Shirley Gulbranson DeZotell, 94 of Mesa, AZ passed away Thursday, July 30, 2015 in Mesa. She was born November 19, 1920 in Florence, SD, the daughter of H. Dale and Ida (Ustrud) White. She received her B.S. degree from SDSU in Brookings. She was a home economics teacher at the Flandreau Indian School for 23 years, retiring in 1980.
Shirley lived in Castlewood and Trent before moving to Sioux Falls in 1980. She married George Gulbranson in July 1947, who passed away in 1976. She then married James DeZotell in March 1979 and he passed in 1996. Shirley resided in Mesa for the past 28 years.
Shirley was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls where she was actively involved in church activities and programs. She also was a member of the Trent Ladies Auxiliary and an officer in the women’s support organization for the VFW in Sioux Falls. She enjoyed volunteer work, reading, sewing, and crocheting.
Survivors include her son, Rex Gulbranson (wife Beverly); grandchildren, Shannon (wife Marijo), Shawna, Stephanie (husband Sean) and Lea Gulbranson; daughters-in-law Pearl (husband Ted) and Trish Gulbranson. Her nine great grandchildren include Katie Jo VanSteenberg (husband Dylan), Grady, Gavin and Brynn Gulbranson, Bradley Cranny (wife Kyla), Sean Carroll, Brady, Bailey and Sydney Badwound. She also had two great, great grandchildren, Jocelyn Cranny and Drake VanSteenberg; and sister, Ramona Ustrud.
Shirley was preceded in death by her sons Jeffrey and Scott Gulbranson and sister, Fern Miracle.
A memorial service began at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 29, 2015 at East Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Baltic. Her cremains were interred next to her husband George in the East Nidaros Lutheran Cemetery.
