Barbara Marie Kelly (nee Love) was born Mar 13, 1932, the 13th of 13 children, to Lawrence and Myrtie Love, in Shiloh MO. She passed away at 83 on Sept 21, 2015 in Kaysville UT, her home for 40 years. She is survived by her sister Lucille in La Grande OR (99 years old); her daughter Sonja Rowell, husband Dale; Grandson Ryan, wife Amanda, children, Caleb and Austyn; Grandson Aaron, wife Mandi, son Steven; and her son Stephen Kelly ,wife Mary, Grandson Chris, children, Teagan and Audrey, Granddaughter, Megan, husband, Michael and Grandson Matthew.

So small when she was born, they kept her warm in a shoe box placed near the wood stove. Her father called her “Witty Wee” for her small stature and sharp wit! It proved to be the perfect nickname for the beautiful, determined, spirited woman she would become. She married Richard (Dick) Kelly in Denver CO and they enjoyed life as an Air Force family. The family enjoyed duty stations throughout the US and in Ramstein and Stuttgart Germany. In spite of moving their household 14 times during Dick’s service, Barbara developed a thriving career of her own. Starting out as a clerk typist at Shaw AFB, she took on increasing responsibility including serving as the executive secretary for several generals. No doubt she kept the place running, always making her general the best supported and prepared officer possible. She was known and respected for keeping things in line and speaking her mind. She made many close friends with families’ stationed together and developed enduring friendships with co-workers. Our German friends held a special place in her heart. Barbara always stayed in touch with family and the friends of her youth. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were a great joy to her and she said they simply made her happy. She also loved reading, email, shopping, taking care of her home, gardening and spoiling her pets.

Growing up poor, during the depression, shaped her perspective and she was always grateful for the good life she and her family enjoyed. Generous to a fault, she only expected sincere thanks for her generosity. She valued hard work and always backed the “underdog” trying to overcome difficult circumstances. She taught Sonja and Stephen to be kind to people and creatures alike, to be truthful and respectful and to be strong enough to succeed in their endeavors.

We will celebrate her life in a memorial December 30, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N Fairfield Rd, Layton UT 84041. Family will receive visitors from 10 to 11 a.m. at the mortuary.
