SHELTON — Wesley J. “Wes” Cornelius, 82, of rural Shelton died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society in Wood River.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Shelton. The Rev. Bryan Gies will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery at Lowell. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wesley was born Oct. 25, 1933, in Blue Hill to Clarence and Helen (Stupenhorst) Cornelius. He grew up and attended school in Alda, where he participated in drama and basketball, graduating in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958.

On Sept. 4, 1966, in Shelton, Wes was united in marriage to the love of his life of nearly 50 years, Diane Uhrich. The couple lived their entire married life on the home place between Shelton and Kenesaw where he farmed and raised cattle. To this union three sons were born, Keith, Alan, and Brad.

Wes was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lowell. He also held memberships at the Platt-Duetsche and Saddle Club and was an officer of the Lowell Drainage District. He enjoyed dancing, visiting with friends, going to cattle sales, and taking trips to Las Vegas and Husker football games.

When blessed with a rare inch and one-half of rain, Wes would treat his family to a Royals baseball game or a quick visit to the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Wes was a familiar face at his sons’ and grandsons’ activities. Later in life, some of his most precious moments were spent with his grandsons canoeing, fishing, and taking long drives to view the countryside.

Survivors include his wife, Diane, of rural Shelton; sons and daughters-in-law, Keith “K.C.” and Jackie Cornelius of Shelton, Alan and Lori Cornelius of Shelton, and Brad Cornelius of Omaha; grandsons, Trevor, Michael, and Kaden Cornelius, all of Shelton; sister and brother-in-law, Bev and Darold Strong of Alda; sister-in-law, Janna Cornelius of Alda; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jan and Tom Sorahan of Grand Island; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Wes was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Shirley Cornelius; and brother, Wayne Cornelius.

Anyone who knew Wes would describe him as a hard-working man with a fun-loving side, as evidenced by the ever-present ornery twinkle in his eye. His wit and humor will be dearly missed.
