MILITARY BIO:
Johnnie Mack Medley was shown as residing in Alleghany Co., NC, when he entered into the US Army on Sept. 23, 1942 at Camp Croft, SC...His marital status was 'single' and his education was grammar schooling. His serial number was 34432355. His pre-war occupation code was 'textiles'. He was assigned to the 455th AAA Bn., after the unit was formed in Sept. 1942..The 455th AAA trained at Camp Stewart and Ft. Benning, Ga., then went overseas to Norfolk, England (in Sept. 1943). Johnnie was in Battery 'D'. His rank was Private. ...Johnnie's unit was located at a B-24 bomber repair airbase at Watton, Norfolk, England. He is only shown in photos taken in 1942 at Camp Stewart, Ga.
In July 1944, the 455th AAA went to France for 'Operation Cobra', as part of Patton's 3rd Army, Walker's XX Corps. They later went into Germany and Austria and returned home in October 1945. The unit shotdown/damaged over 130 German aircraft and became the second highest-scoring antiaircraft unit in Patton's 3rd Army.
Johnnie's name did not appear on the 'gangplank list' of Btry. 'D' men returning to the USA from France in Oct. 1945. Family members have indicated to me that he did not go overseas with the 455th, being discharged from service, probably due to medical reasons.
