He was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Neward, N.J., a son of Frank and Agnes Verbickas Bernot. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he played football. He was an Army Air Corps veteran. He was associated with Highland Motor, Inc. 45 years. He was a member of High Point Kiwanis Club and received the Hixson Fellow Award, a member of the Salvation Army board for 25 years and also received their Merit Award. He was a supporter of the UNC Educational Foundation, and a charter member of the Thursday Night Gin Rummy Club. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
On Aug. 26, 1949, he married Anna Gamble, who preceded him in death July 6, 1993.
Surviving are two daughters, Miss Brandon Bernot of High Point and Mrs. Lynne Fogarty and husband William of Gulf Breeze, Fla., a son, Robert Gamble Bernot of Watauga County; a sister, Mrs. Frances T. Grimm and Nancy VanDoehren and their extended families, including Mrs. Charles Grimm of Edison, N.J.; and Betsy Gamble Hansen, Harald R. Hansen, Ed Hansen, all of Atlanta, Ga., and Brandon Hansen Frein of Chicago, Ill.
Memorial service that was previously scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church by Dr. Kenneth Broman-Fulks, has been postponed for a later date. Inurnment will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Home on E. Lexington Avenue.
