A native of Patrick County, he was born March 17, 1919, and was a son of the late Walter and Vergie Martin Belton.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers: Eugene S. Belton and George A. Belton.
He was owner of Goad and Belton Oil Company and was a World War II veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Nell Goad Belton of the home; two sons: James E. "Jimmy" Belton Jr. of Stuart and Michael R. Belton of Critz; one daughter, Carol Vernon of Stuart; one brother, Jack Belton of Rockingham, N.C.; six sisters: Mabel Biggs, Evelyn Hazelwood, Lorene Hazelwood and June Cox, all of Stuart, Mary Jane Harris of Spencer and Patricia Tolson of Roanoke; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home in Stuart.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Concord United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Louise Tatum, Patrick Springs, Va. 24133; or to the Mary Horner Walker Presbyterian Church General Fund, c/o Cleo George, Ararat, Va. 24053.
