A Haskell funeral home owner died after he crashed the pickup he was driving into another occupied vehicle and two parked cars. Stuart Kent Dowdy, 49, died Wednesday evening. He had been in a collision in downtown Haskell. Po-lice said they haven't received information on the cause of his death from the state Medical Examiner's Office in Tulsa. Dowdy Funeral Home has been in Haskell since 1936, said Mike Marker, owner of Leonard and Marker Funeral Home in Bixby. Marker, who also was friends with Dowdy, said Dowdy and Bobbie Dowdy, his mother, owned the business jointly. "He was one of my best friends," Marker said. "He was a pillar of the community. The entire community is in a state of shock. He was one of the most honest, gracious, caring men that have been around in a long time. He was just a good man." Dowdy was driving east on West Commercial Street in a 1997 GMC pickup about 5 p.m. Wednesday, police said. He crossed the main road, Broadway, and struck a 1993 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Sammie Roberts, 35, of Haskell. His vehicle then hit a car and a truck which was both parked. Roberts was not injured, said Bob Wheeland, senior officer at the Haskell Police Department. Dowdy was taken by Muskogee County Emergency Medical Service to the Haskell Airport to be taken to a Tulsa hospital by helicopter, said Rebecca Smith, public relations coordinator for Muskogee County EMS. When EMS arrived, Dowdy did not have a pulse and was not breathing, Smith said. Plans were made to transport him by helicopter. When the helicopter arrived, medics on the helicopter determined their protocol allowed them to give up efforts to revive. He was then taken to Muskogee Regional Medical Center, Smith said. According to Marker, Dowdy graduated from Haskell High School in 1970 and the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service in 1984 and went on to serve as director at Dowdy from 1984 to the present, Marker said. Dowdy also was a 20-year member of the Haskell Volunteer Fire Department and served as chief for two years during that time. He was a member of the Haskell Assembly of God Church where he was a deacon. He liked to hunt and fish, but he loved classic cars and NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), Marker said. "He had a '57 Chevy that was his pride and joy," Marker said. "He was always tinkering with it." Dowdy and his wife Betty have two children, Jay and Cammie. Services for Dowdy will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Haskell High School gymnasium.
