Eldridge STANTON was born on 31 Dec 1769 in Stonington, New London, CT. He died on 31 Dec 1813 in Battle of Black Rock, New York.

Information from Elizabeth Wolcott, nee Stanton, eldest daughter of Per Elizabeth Wolcott, nee Stanton:

"The Stanton family (except Eldredge) lived in northern New York...in Wyoming Valley...Eldredge Stanton near Coburg, Ontario, Canada."

"In the War of 1812, General Phineas Stanton was in command of the Amercian Forces at the Battle of Black Rock, and on December 31, 1813, had several horses shot from under him and was taken prisoner, and was a prisoner in Canada until close of the war or exchange of prisoners.

At the time of this battle Eldredge (brother of General Phineas Stanton) was on a visit to his relatives and for the purpose of securing a cargo of salt to take into Canada, and went out to see the battle. Seeing his brother taken prisoner, and most of the under officers killed, he, Eldredge, took command of the Amercian Forces and was killed in battle December 31, 1813 and buried in Middleberry, Gennesee Co, NY, where the Masons erected a monument over his remains. His (Eldredge's ) lands in Canada were confiscated by the Canadian Government, but years afterwards the U.S. Government allowed his widow a pension and each of the children (including Thomas Irish's mother--youngest child) a W.S. Land Warrant. "

Buried at Wright's Corner Cemetery, Middlebury, NY. Incription reads, :Silence, my friends your weeping eyes; Beneath this stone my body lies; My country's freedom to maintain; I fought and at Black Rock was slain." Monument erected by the Masons. Parents: Phineas II STANTON and Esther GALLUP.
